There have been multiple times in my parenting journey where I’ve been told “you’re going to miss this.” Most of those times happen to be while I’m grocery shopping and the baby is screaming and the toddler is sampling all of the candy in the checkout aisle. I must look frazzled because I can almost count on some sweet old lady saying those daunting words to me. “you’re going to miss this.”

Miss this?! I will not.

The tantrums, the arguments, the fifty-five minutes it takes him to put shoes on each day.

Miss this?! I will not.

The lack of sleep, the lack of money, the lack of date nights with my husband.

Miss this?! I will not.

The reading minutes, the bedtime minutes, the NO minutes to myself.

Miss this?! I will not.

The dirty diapers, the dirty car, the dirty house, the bathtub FULL of dirty children.

Miss this?! I will not.

The endless dinner making, shoe-tying, tiny clothes buying.

Miss this?! I will not.

The soccer practices, violin practices, trying to be a decent parent practices!

Miss this?! I will not.

MISS THIS?! ALL OF THIS?! I WILL NOT!!

…and then i sit down for five minutes.. The baby is asleep. The kids are at school. The house is quiet and clean. The day is beautiful and my diet coke is full…but something is missing. Everything is missing. My babies are missing. The messes are missing. The constant MOM! MOM! MOM! is missing. I am MISSING.

No matter how much we SHOUT that motherhood does not define us… Motherhood IS us. Motherhood IS me and that little old lady is right. I’m going to miss this-all of this. I already do.

What do you think? Will you miss this?
